In a recent series of MLB games, both Cincinnati Reds’ shortstop Elly De La Cruz and Seattle Mariners’ pitcher Trent Thornton experienced health issues due to extreme heat. De La Cruz vomited on the field during the Reds’ 6-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Bush Stadium, where temperatures reached 92°F (33°C). Despite the setback, he continued playing and hit a two-run homer.
Meanwhile, in Wrigley Field, with temperatures hitting 94°F (34°C), Thornton suffered from thermal exhaustion and required medical assistance after pitching 2 1/3 innings in the Mariners’ 10-7 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Mariners manager Dan Wilson reported that Thornton was in good spirits after receiving treatment.
Additionally, Home Plate Judge Chad Whitson also fell ill during the games but was cleared to officiate in subsequent matches. Wrigley Field staff faced similar health challenges, leading to plans for a cooling station due to the ongoing heatwave affecting much of the eastern U.S., with expectations of breaking daily temperature records.
