In the ongoing trial between Elon Musk and Sam Altman, evidence presented reveals Musk attempted to recruit Altman to Tesla’s AI lab before Musk left OpenAI’s board in February 2018. Musk offered Altman a board seat at Tesla, as indicated by emails shown in court. Musk claims Altman and OpenAI President Greg Brockman misused his $38 million investment to create a profitable company valued over $800 billion.
OpenAI’s legal team countered by suggesting Musk has been resentful since his failed 2017 takeover attempt and argued that he sought to undermine OpenAI. Testimony highlighted Musk’s interest in merging OpenAI’s resources with Tesla’s goals. A February 2018 document indicated Gillis, a former OpenAI advisor, inquired about bringing Altman into Tesla’s fold, aiming for Musk to co-opt Altman’s leadership.
Despite Musk’s ambitions, Gillis testified that Altman never joined Tesla, and the planned AI lab event at a major conference did not materialize. This contradicts Musk’s previous claims regarding personnel moves within OpenAI. The trial continues to explore the dynamics between Musk, Altman, and the future of AI development.
