A van ramming and stabbing incident near Berlin’s Pride festival left one person dead and 16 injured, with authorities suspecting an Islamic extremist motive. The suspect, Abdul Barout, a 21-year-old German national of Lebanese descent, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. He allegedly injured festival-goers with a van and a machete after crashing the vehicle into a tree.
Police and prosecutors are actively searching for Barout and conducted searches of locations associated with him, including an apartment in Berlin. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed the suspect’s ties to Islamic circles but stated that specific motives remain unclear.
The attack occurred during the closing party of the Pride event, known as Christopher Street Day, prompting immediate cancellation of festivities. Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the act as an “attack on our society,” highlighting the importance of protecting freedom. In nearby Amsterdam, authorities are increasing security measures in response to the incident as World Pride celebrations commence.
