This summer, multiple heatwaves led to school closures as classroom temperatures soared. Parents, teachers, and governors are actively discussing ways to ensure student safety amidst rising heat. Experts emphasize that governments and local authorities need to enhance school resilience against climate change in the long term.

For immediate action, parents should engage constructively with school leadership about heat issues, rather than assuming that nothing is being done. Collaboration is essential, and parents can form groups to show that their concerns are shared. Schools may have sustainability teams for assistance, highlighting that extreme heat is a significant public health and educational concern.

Before making interventions, it’s crucial to assess the specific causes of overheating in schools. Quick fixes like air conditioning might not be appropriate if the root causes aren’t addressed. Preventive outdoor measures, such as planting trees or improving shading, are recommended over reactive indoor solutions.

Funding for cooling measures poses a challenge, but schools can explore local authority support, foundation investments, and grants for renovations that simultaneously improve cooling and security. Schools should also look into developer contributions for local projects aimed at addressing rising temperatures.

While fundraising can support smaller initiatives like tree planting and temporary shade structures, it risks perpetuating inequality in poorer areas. The focus should be on identifying the most impactful solutions before pursuing funding.
