French authorities have ordered nearly 4,000 additional evacuations along the Atlantic coast due to a large wildfire near Bordeaux, escalating the total number of evacuees across France and Spain to approximately 330,000. The Gironde wildfires have burned an area four times the size of Paris, prompting unprecedented evacuations for peacetime France. While firefighters have managed to stabilize parts of the fire, concerns remain as rising temperatures may exacerbate the situation.
The French National Weather Service has issued a heat warning, forecasting temperatures between 33 to 35 degrees Celsius. Over 1,160 square kilometers have burned in France this year, attributed to extreme heat and dryness linked to climate change. Meanwhile, Spain is bracing for its fourth heatwave, with significant fires still active, including one of the largest in the country’s history. Approximately 79,000 people have been evacuated there, and authorities have declared national emergencies in response to the ongoing crises.
