Berlin police shot and killed a 21-year-old suspect, Abdul B., during an attempted arrest at the city’s Pride festival after he allegedly charged at them with a knife. The incident occurred at a community garden in the Spandau district on Sunday. Abdul B. is accused of a violent attack the previous night, where he drove into a crowd near the Brandenburg Gate, killing one woman and injuring 29 others.
Authorities described Abdul B. as a radicalized member of an “Islamist circle.” He had a criminal history, including past convictions related to preparing acts of violence and attempting to join ISIS. German officials, including Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, labeled the weekend’s events as an Islamist attack.
The attack took place outside the secure festival area, and many victims were attendees heading to and from the celebration. Berlin’s leaders condemned the violence, emphasizing the need for tolerance and unity within society.
