A fourth firefighter, Nathan Matthews, 43, died in a wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border, following an incident where his colleagues were engulfed by flames. This tragedy occurred amid devastating wildfires in the western U.S., particularly near Sisters, Oregon, where a lightning-caused fire has burned around 40 square miles and is only 5% contained. Wind gusts threatened further spread, prompting evacuations, though city officials maintained that Sisters was not in immediate danger.
The summer has seen extreme heat and dry conditions fueling wildfires across multiple states, with over 900 fires burning in Canada as well. Matthews was part of a Helitack crew, which had already seen three other firefighters die in a related incident. Memorial services for Matthews are yet to be announced.
