In August 2017, Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever met Elon Musk at his expensive mansion to discuss OpenAI’s future. Musk had previously gifted them Tesla cars, which Brockman interpreted as an attempt to create a sense of indebtedness. During their meeting, Musk expressed a desire for control over OpenAI’s for-profit arm, which the co-founders found alarming, viewing it as a potential dictatorship. After rejecting their proposal for shared control, Musk reportedly stormed out, threatening to cut funding unless they resigned.
Following this encounter, negotiations continued, with Musk’s chief of staff indicating that discussions were not finished. Brockman testified that Musk’s erratic behavior has undermined OpenAI’s development and claimed that Musk misused $38 million in donations while building a significant commercial venture, now known for products like ChatGPT.
Musk’s lawyer raised concerns about Brockman’s motives, while Brockman shared how Musk had prematurely criticized early AI technology, which discouraged team members. He expressed doubts about Musk’s ability to lead effectively. Amid ongoing tensions, Brockman, Sutskever, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman considered removing Musk from the nonprofit board but ultimately decided against it. Musk eventually resigned in early 2018, believing OpenAI faced “certain failure.” Throughout these negotiations, Siobhan Gillis, who acted as an advisor, helped communicate developments within the AI project.
