A civil jury ruled that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is not responsible for the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Valentina Orellana Peralta, who was killed by a stray bullet in a Burlington store in North Hollywood. The incident occurred on December 23, 2021, when police responded to a violent altercation involving a suspect. Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. fired shots, hitting both the suspect and Orellana Peralta, who was in a dressing room with her mother.
The wrongful death lawsuit, filed by her family, claimed the LAPD failed to adequately train and supervise officers, alleging negligence led to the shooting. The family sought $100 million in damages. The LAPD declined to comment during the trial, but city attorney Heidi Feldstein Soto stated the city shares the family’s grief while affirming the jury’s decision. The California Department of Justice did not file criminal charges related to the incident.
