In Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, a shooting targeting law enforcement resulted in two fatalities, including a police officer. Another officer was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The incident began with a 911 call about gunfire and escalated into a gunfight, leading to the death of the suspect as well.
Montreal Police Chief Fadi Dagher indicated the attack appeared to be an ambush, with police investigating a manifesto linked to the gunman that reportedly espouses incel ideology. The area, usually a quiet residential neighborhood, was placed under a temporary lockdown as authorities searched for threats.
Quebec Public Safety Minister Ian Lafreniere noted that this was the first police officer death in Montreal in 24 years, emphasizing the city’s general safety. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as police responded rapidly, with one civilian slightly injured. Following the incident, authorities urged public caution, but the shelter-in-place order has since been lifted. Quebec Premier Christine Frechette expressed gratitude to first responders and called for the Quebec flag to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims.
