Swiss voters are poised to reject two significant proposals in a Sunday referendum. Early predictions show strong opposition to a civic duty initiative that would replace male-only military conscription with a citizenship service requirement for all citizens, regardless of gender, and to a tax on ultra-wealthy estates aimed at funding climate change initiatives.
The civic duty initiative, designed to promote “true equality” and social cohesion, is forecasted to be dismissed by 84% of voters. Proponents argue it addresses gender disparity, but critics contend it would exacerbate existing inequalities, noting that women already dominate unpaid labor. The Swiss government has also voiced concerns about the economic impact and costs associated with doubling conscription.
The second proposal, the Future Initiative, seeks a new 50% inheritance tax on wealth over 50 million Swiss francs (~$63 million). It is expected to fail with 79% of votes against it, partly due to fears that high taxes could drive wealthy residents out of Switzerland and jeopardize family-owned businesses. Advocates argue the tax could generate significant revenue for climate initiatives, while opponents counter that such a tax amounts to state overreach.
Despite the anticipated outcomes, committee chair Noemi Wroten believes discussions around civic duty will continue to evolve in Switzerland.
