In a world increasingly dominated by AI, the handmade art of "Out of Words" stands out as a unique co-op 2D platformer, meticulously crafted in the real world. Inspired by Danish poet Morten Sondergaard, the game explores themes of language and human relationships.
Players control best friends Kurt and Kara, who struggle to express their feelings as they transition into adolescence. After losing their ability to speak in a magical land called Vocabulantis, they embark on a journey with a creature named Aleph that grants them powers.
During a demo at Summer Game Fest, Game Design Lead Jeff Sparks showcased various elements, including a fun mini-game involving a stuck bike and different atmospheric environments created through artistic techniques. The game focuses on cooperative gameplay, requiring players to communicate for success, although it can be enjoyed both locally and online.
With an estimated playtime of about 10 hours and secret areas containing collectibles, the game aims to evoke emotions—even if not intended to make players cry. Sparks emphasized the importance of connection, creativity, and meaningful experiences in a world needing more color and joy. Set for release in early 2027 on multiple platforms, "Out of Words" promises to appeal to fans of cooperative games and handmade artistry.
