Russia has issued a warning to diplomatic missions and international organizations about potential “large-scale retaliatory strikes” against Ukraine, particularly targeting “decision-making centers,” if Ukraine disrupts the upcoming Victory Day celebrations in Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized the need for the evacuation of diplomatic staff from Kyiv, coinciding with Russia’s unilateral ceasefire declared for May 8-9 amid these commemorative events.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed this ceasefire proposal, viewing it as insincere, and noted ongoing attacks in multiple regions of Ukraine, indicating that Ukraine would respond to violations “like a mirror.”
Additionally, Russia is scaling down the Victory Day parade, lacking military equipment for the first time in nearly two decades, citing the “operational situation.” This shift reflects Moscow’s heightened security concerns and the desire to project military strength despite vulnerabilities. The Kremlin’s rhetoric may also aim to deter drone attacks and maintain control over the narrative domestically, especially given its declining military prestige.
