Allegations against University of Alabama at Birmingham softball coach Taylor Smart include racist comments and both mental and physical abuse toward players, as detailed in a Sports Illustrated report. Smart, who has “taken a step back” from the program, is accused by multiple student-athletes and parents of subjecting players to verbal abuse and body shaming. One player’s mother described Smart as “manipulative,” while another parent reported that Smart discouraged her daughter from associating with certain friends.
Physical abuse claims arose after a witness reported seeing Smart punch a player during a game, leading to concerns about the player’s distress. Additional allegations involved dangerous pre-season training, where players were forced to push assistant coach Anna Shelnutt’s car while running in front of it, posing serious risks.
There are also claims of inappropriate relationships between Smart and players, including staying at their homes. UAB responded by emphasizing its commitment to a safe environment for student-athletes and affirming that they will investigate any concerns raised.
