Walmart has recently adjusted its policy on how store employees fulfill online orders, emphasizing safety amid criticism. According to a memo obtained by Business Insider, employees can now fill carts with up to six blue boxes instead of eight, aiming to improve visibility while navigating the store. The instruction to push carts in clear visibility and pull them in limited visibility addresses concerns raised by employees, particularly regarding safety issues like being struck by carts.
This policy change follows earlier guidelines that faced backlash on social media platforms, where workers expressed safety concerns. Walmart did not comment directly on the changes as it enters a quiet period before its quarterly earnings report but emphasized its priority on safety for employees and customers.
Walmart has experienced significant growth in its e-commerce business, with a reported 27% sales increase last quarter. The company is also exploring technological solutions, such as digital shelf labels to enhance picking efficiency. Despite these adjustments, reducing cart capacity may impact order fulfillment rates during picking runs.
