Health authorities worldwide are monitoring passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship due to a hantavirus outbreak that has resulted in three deaths and several infections. Investigators believe a Dutch couple may have contracted the virus while birdwatching in Argentina prior to boarding the ship.
The outbreak was first confirmed on May 2, with the initial death occurring on April 11. Passengers who disembarked on April 24, the date of the first confirmed case, are being traced for contacts as symptoms may appear 1 to 8 weeks after exposure. The World Health Organization (WHO) deems the risk to the general public low, emphasizing the importance of public health measures.
Onboard, most passengers and crew are reportedly asymptomatic, but the ship is under scrutiny as it heads to Spain’s Canary Islands. Investigations are focused on the origins of the virus, particularly in Argentina, and health authorities are deploying diagnostic kits to assist in tracking the situation.
