The British government has withdrawn a $1.15bn support package for a liquefied natural gas project in Mozambique, following opposition over its environmental, security, and human rights implications. Business Secretary Peter Kyle announced the decision, stating that UK Export Finance (Ukef) deemed the project’s risks had increased since it was initially approved in 2020. Critics argue the project contributes to the region’s climate crisis and has fueled terrorism. Environmental groups, such as Friends of the Earth, had long opposed the project, calling for a shift towards renewable energy development in Mozambique. Campaigners hailed the decision as recognition of the project’s unsustainability and urged international banks to reconsider their support.
