The 6th Annual University Free Speech Rankings reveal contrasting results for Indiana universities. Purdue University ranked as the second best for free speech, while Indiana University Bloomington was among the lowest. The rankings, published by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (Fire) and University Pulse, were based on responses from 68,510 students across 257 schools.
Other Indiana institutions included Notre Dame at 238th and DePauw at 18th. Fire President Greg Lukianov emphasized a troubling trend among students resisting controversial speakers, suggesting such attitudes harm critical thinking and exacerbate cultural polarization.
The report found that 166 of the surveyed universities received an “F” for their free speech environments. Notably, only 36% of students felt their administration strongly protected freedom of speech. This year’s findings indicate an alarming acceptance of violence over peaceful protests among students, which is perceived as a broader American issue.
Overall, the rankings highlight significant disparities in free speech across universities and underscore the need for proactive measures to foster a trustworthy and open campus climate.
