In Shreveport, Louisiana, a father, Shamar Elkins, shot and killed eight children—including seven of his own—in a tragic family attack on a Sunday morning. The incident spanned two homes and is regarded as one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent years. Two women, including Elkins’ estranged wife, were also shot and seriously injured. The children, aged 3 to 11, were found in one home, while one child was discovered on the roof after reportedly trying to escape.
Elkins was killed by police during a pursuit after the attack, which authorities believe was a domestic dispute. He had a prior arrest related to firearms but had no known history of domestic violence issues. Family members described the children as “happy kids,” and a community prayer vigil followed the tragedy. Local officials expressed shock and sorrow over the event, calling it “the worst tragic situation ever.”
The shooting marks the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since January 2024.
