The Ford Mustang GTD Competition has set a new record as the fastest street-legal American car at the Nürburgring, clocking a lap time of 6 minutes 40.835 seconds—over eight seconds quicker than the Corvette ZR1X. This Competition variant improves upon the Mustang GTD’s previous best time of 6 minutes 57.685 seconds by 11 seconds, making it the fastest American production car ahead of the Dodge Viper ACR.
After Chevrolet’s ZR1 and ZR1X outpaced the Mustang GTD last year, Ford aimed for redemption with this upgraded model. It features a more powerful version of the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine, lightweight components like magnesium wheels and carbon bucket seats, and aerodynamic improvements including a new rear wing and enhanced downforce. The GTD Competition was piloted by Ford Performance driver Dirk Muller.
A limited production version will be offered, likely priced higher than the standard Mustang GTD’s $327,960 tag. While Ford is focused on performance, Mercedes’ AMG One retains the overall Nürburgring title with a lap time of 6:29.09, and competition from Porsche’s upcoming 911 GT2 RS may also emerge.
Overall, Ford demonstrates ongoing innovation and rivalry with Chevrolet in the high-performance arena.
