The British military reported a cargo ship was attacked in the Red Sea off Yemen’s coast, marking the latest maritime incident in the area. The attack occurred near Hodeidah, controlled by Houthi rebels, who also recently killed 16 soldiers from government-allied forces in a significant assault. The cargo ship was targeted by armed assailants while it was about 30 nautical miles from Hodeidah; no group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Houthis threatened future maritime actions.
In a separate confrontation, the Houthis clashed with pro-government forces, leading to 16 deaths and numerous injuries, marking one of the deadliest attacks in years. Despite a UN-negotiated ceasefire in 2022, tensions escalated, with the Houthis warning of threats to Saudi Arabia, the main supporter of Yemen’s government. They accused Riyadh of interfering with Iranian flights. The ongoing conflict has devastated Yemen, causing a severe humanitarian crisis since it began in 2015.
