Diana Saunders, a nurse from Vacaville, California, has been awarded $300,000 in a lawsuit against Carnival Cruise Line after suffering injuries from a severe fall while intoxicated. The incident occurred on the Carnival Radiance in January 2024, where Saunders reportedly consumed 14 tequila shots in one day, taking advantage of the ship’s “Cheers!” drink package that allows for 15 drinks within 24 hours.
Saunders claimed that Carnival staff over-served her alcohol, leading to her intoxication and subsequent injuries, including a concussion and back damage. Although Carnival argued that Saunders did not show signs of severe intoxication and challenged her identification of the bartender, the jury sided with her, asserting that crew members had a duty to ensure passenger safety.
Saunders had alleged that the cruise line’s design encourages excessive drinking, as every part of the ship features alcohol-serving stations. Carnival plans to appeal the verdict, expressing disagreement with the jury’s decision.
