The NBA has announced its finalists for the end-of-season awards, including MVP, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year, and Clutch Player of the Year. These were revealed during halftime of the NBC broadcast of Game 1 between the Pistons and Magic, with additional details shared via the league’s social media.
MVP: The top contenders are Nikola Jokic, who averaged 27.7 points while leading in both rebounds and assists, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, leading the top team despite injuries to starters, and Victor Wenbanyama, who averaged 25.0 points and is also in the running for Defensive Player of the Year.
Rookie of the Year: The competition is tight between J.J. Knuppel, who played a crucial role for the Hornets, averaging 18.5 points, and Jayden Flagg, who starred on a struggling team with averages of 21.0 points. Da’Sean Edgecombe is also a candidate, contributing significantly in 75 games.
Coach of the Year: Joe Mazzula (Celtics), JB Bickerstaff (Pistons), and Mitch Johnson (Spurs) have made strong impacts with their teams, overcoming player absences to achieve success.
Defensive Player of the Year: Wenbanyama is favored for his defensive stats, including leading in total blocks and defensive rating. Chet Holmgren and Amen Thompson are also notable candidates for their defensive prowess.
Most Improved Player: Deni Avdija and Jalen Duren have made All-Star appearances this season, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker has significantly boosted his scoring average.
Sixth Man of the Year: Tim Hardaway Jr. excelled shooting 40% from three and played 80 games for the injury-ridden Nuggets. Other contenders include Jaquez and Keldon Johnson, who provided key scoring off the bench.
Clutch Player of the Year: Gilgeous-Alexander and Anthony Edwards ranked first and second in clutch points, with Jamal Murray trailing closely as an efficient scorer.
The awards will be announced in order, starting with Defensive Player of the Year on April 20th.
