Amazon has introduced an AI feature in its app that generates images of fictional products based on user search terms. This tool aims to improve product discovery by creating visual suggestions that match descriptions, such as colors or patterns. While this could help customers find items they don’t have specific names for, the AI-generated images do not correspond to actual products available for purchase.
Amazon’s approach focuses on bridging the gap between customer imagination and product availability, particularly in categories like clothing and home goods. However, critics argue that generating fake images is wasteful and could confuse shoppers, as they might not find real products based on the AI’s suggestions. They suggest that instead, Amazon should utilize its existing database of real products to improve search results.
In addition to this feature, Amazon is rolling out other AI updates, such as shoppable collages, improved text search capabilities, and enhancements for its Lens tool.
