At a recent event near San Francisco Pier, Sam Altman announced the expansion of the World project, powered by Tools for Humanity (TFH), which aims to integrate its verification technology into various sectors, starting with dating apps like Tinder. Altman emphasized the growing influence of AI and the need for identifying human interactions in an AI-dominated environment.
World, formerly known as Worldcoin, differentiates itself by providing a “proof of human” tool through their Orb, a device that scans users’ irises to create unique, anonymous digital identifiers (Verified World IDs). The technology will soon be implemented in Tinder globally after a successful pilot in Japan, allowing users to verify their identity on dating platforms.
Additionally, World is venturing into the entertainment industry with “Concert Kits,” targeting bots that hoard concert tickets. This feature will be integrated into major ticketing systems and promoted through partnerships with artists like 30 Seconds to Mars and Bruno Mars. Other notable integrations include a collaboration with Zoom to combat deepfake threats and partnership with Docusign for authentic signatures.
Scaling the verification process has been a challenge, previously requiring in-person visits to scan users’ eyes. To address scalability, World is expanding its Orb installations in major cities and introducing multiple verification layers, ranging from the high-security Orb authentication to less secure options like selfies for convenience. The new “Selfie Check” feature emphasizes user privacy by ensuring images remain on the device.
