In San Juan, Puerto Rico, a 25-year-old New York tourist named Kevin Marless was fatally shot early Sunday in La Perla, a coastal area known for its troubled past. The shooting occurred around 4:13 AM at a local nightspot, where discussions escalated and led to gunfire, injuring two local residents as well. Marless was an innocent bystander, attending one of Bad Bunny’s 30 concerts with friends.
Police have limited information about the shooting and are reviewing security footage. San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero indicated that authorities will investigate the incident further, noting that the attack happened outside of legal alcohol-serving hours established in a 2023 municipal code. La Perla, once notorious for violence and drug distribution, has seen reduced crime since federal interventions in 2011, but isolated violent incidents persist.
This year, Puerto Rico has recorded 277 murders, down from 325 at this time last year. Incidents involving tourists in La Perla have occurred previously, including stabbings and attacks related to drug purchases.
