Europe is currently experiencing intense heat waves, prompting record heat warnings across many countries. In France, 16 regions, including Paris, are under a red alert, with 68 regions on orange warning. The French Climate Minister has described the situation as “unprecedented.” Spain and Portugal recorded their hottest June temperatures, with a peak of 46.6°C in Portugal. High temperatures have disrupted daily life, leading to the closure of nearly 200 schools in France.
Other countries, including Italy, Germany, and the UK, are also facing severe heat, with health services reporting increased cases of heat-related illnesses. In Turkey, over 50,000 people were evacuated due to wildfires, exacerbated by strong winds. Various Balkan countries are similarly affected, with Serbia reporting record-high temperatures.
Climate experts warn that the increasing intensity and frequency of these heat waves are a direct result of climate change, urging the need for sustainable practices to address the crisis. The situation poses significant risks not only to human health but also to the environment, highlighting the urgent requirement for adaptation measures.
