The US maintained its travel advisory for Bangladesh at “Level 3: Rethink Travel” during a review on April 18, the same level as its previous assessment from September 11. The advisory notes that while civil unrest and violent clashes have decreased since summer 2024 due to a provisional government, the potential for future violence still exists. American citizens are advised to avoid all gatherings, including peaceful ones, and to remain cautious of minor crimes like pickpocketing and more serious offenses such as robbery and assault, which occur in busy urban areas but do not target foreigners specifically.
The advisory highlights a risk of terrorist violence in Bangladesh. As a result, US government officials are restricted from non-essential travel outside diplomatic enclaves in Dhaka without special permission, although travel to Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet is exempt from this requirement. The advisory also warns that the US government’s ability to provide emergency assistance to citizens, especially outside Dhaka, is limited due to local infrastructure and resources. Travelers are encouraged to avoid demonstrations, as even peaceful protests can escalate into violence, and to stay informed through local media.
The Chittagong Hills travel advisory remains at “Level 4: Do Not Travel,” due to significant security risks including violence and crime. The advisory was revised shortly before a scheduled US delegation visit, reflecting a previously perceived reduction in threats compared to a “Level 4” warning issued in July and August amid student protests.
