Palestinians suffering from various illnesses, including children and adults, have begun evacuating Gaza for medical treatment in Egypt following the reopening of the Rafah border crossing, which had been closed for eight months due to the Israeli military’s control of Gaza. The reopening was part of a hostage exchange deal between Hamas and Israel. Among the evacuees, many, like Moatasasem Rami Naville Sammour, have faced severe health issues, including autoimmune diseases and injuries from the conflict. The World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted the urgent need for medical care, estimating that around 14,000 people require treatment not available in Gaza, with many suffering from conditions necessitated by war-related injuries. As of recent reports, over 47,000 Palestinians have died due to Israeli attacks following the Hamas assault on October 7, 2023. The border’s reopening coincides with ongoing negotiations for the release of hostages and prisoners.
