Microsoft is facing a significant issue with the transition to Windows 11, as approximately 850 million users are confronted with security concerns and deadlines. In the past 31 days, 40 million Windows 10 users upgraded to Windows 11, reversing the prior trend of steady adoption. Windows 10 users are allowed a free upgrade if their PCs meet security hardware requirements, but there’s a potential cost after October 2024 for those who wish to delay. Microsoft has hinted that the free upgrade may eventually expire, leading to confusion among users.
Despite recent updates complicating software installations, the upgrade trend continues. However, around 500 million users will remain vulnerable to security risks if they don’t upgrade. Microsoft is targeting 2025 for broad adoption of Windows 11 and AI-compatible PCs, but existing issues persist. As the October deadline approaches, there is speculation about introducing “upgrade light” options to mitigate the looming security threats.
