The Red Sox announced significant organizational changes, firing manager Alex Cora and five members of his coaching staff after a disappointing 10-17 start to the season. Chad Tracy, the manager of Triple-A Worcester, will take over as interim manager starting Sunday against the Orioles. The coaching staff changes include the dismissal of hitting coach Pete Fatze, third base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, and others, while Jason Varitek has been reassigned.
The decision is particularly striking as it came just hours after a commanding 17-1 victory—the largest margin of victory for the club in over a century. This marks the first in-season managerial firing since 2001. Cora, who led the team to a franchise-record 108 wins in 2018, had a mixed tenure, with recent seasons plagued by inconsistency.
Despite hiring seasoned pitchers in the offseason, the team has struggled, and Cora emphasized the need to return to a .500 record. Major League Baseball leadership, including President Sam Kennedy and Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, will discuss these changes further ahead of Sunday’s game.
