A 41-year-old Afghan immigrant, Mohammad Nazir Pakhtiawar, died soon after being detained by ICE in Texas on March 13, 2023. He was taken into custody as he dropped his children off at school, and died the following day in a Dallas hospital. His family, particularly his son Imraine, is seeking answers about the cause of his death, noting he was previously healthy.
Pakhtiawar, who had been granted temporary humanitarian status after being evacuated from Afghanistan, had faced prior arrests on fraud and theft charges, though he hadn’t been convicted. His brother, Nasir, insists he was a wartime hero who served alongside U.S. forces, despite DHS’s statement that there’s no record of military service.
After his detention, Pakhtiawar reportedly complained of shortness of breath and, following a brief hospitalization, was pronounced dead. His family has received little information from ICE, which is currently investigating the incident. Nasir expressed frustration over the lack of clarity regarding his brother’s treatment and death, emphasizing that he just wants answers.
