Duke University’s quarterback Darian Mensah is temporarily barred from enrolling at another school or playing football after a North Carolina judge issued a restraining order following Duke’s lawsuit against him. The order came after Mensah notified the school of his intent to transfer, and the judge deemed it necessary to protect Duke’s rights. Duke is expected to enter his name into the transfer portal by Wednesday, which would allow other schools to contact him. Miami is currently considered the frontrunner for his transfer.
Mensah, a second-team All-ACC selection and top transfer quarterback for the 2026 season, has a contract with Duke limiting his name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights. Duke’s lawsuit claims allowing Mensah to break this contract would cause “irreparable harm” to the university, emphasizing the public interest in maintaining contractual integrity. A spokesperson for Duke stated that the university expects Mensah to uphold his contractual obligations. The judge ordered Duke to post a $1,000 bail, which would be payable to Mensah if Duke prevails in the case.
