A former NASCAR driver, Greg Biffle, and his family were among seven people killed in a plane crash at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina. The Cessna C550 crashed around 10:20 a.m. local time while attempting to land, bursting into flames upon impact. Biffle was on board with his wife, Christina, daughter, Emma, and son, Ryder. NASCAR remembered him as a beloved competitor with significant contributions to the sport and local community, including rescue efforts during Hurricane Helen.
Tributes flowed in from various figures, including North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, who praised Biffle for his courage and compassion. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, which led to the temporary closure of the airport.
Biffle had a celebrated racing career spanning 20 years, winning 19 races across the Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and Craftsman Truck Series. He was recognized as one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023. After a period of retirement, he returned for a one-off race in 2019.
