Graham Platner, a candidate for a Republican-held Senate seat in Maine, has faced scrutiny over past online comments endorsing political violence and dismissing military rape, which he later deleted. Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin acknowledged the posts as “offensive” but stated they shouldn’t disqualify him from leadership roles. Platner, who ran for Senate after retiring from the Army in 2012 and dealing with PTSD, apologized for his comments, emphasizing they don’t reflect who he is today.

Despite the backlash, he continued to promote a progressive campaign and highlighted efforts in combating military misogyny and homophobia. His candidacy has drawn support from figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders. Platner’s past remarks have drawn criticism, causing some, including his political director, to resign, citing differences in values. However, many Democratic leaders in Maine have stood by him.
