In an interview, Masahiro Sakurai discusses the development of Kirby Air Riders, particularly focusing on the Road Trip mode. Initially absent from the design, the Road Trip concept emerged to offer players engaging single-player challenges beyond typical short gameplay loops.
Sakurai emphasizes the difficulty in creating a compelling story in a racing environment where characters don’t naturally interact. Instead, the narrative revolves around machines like Zola, Nova, and Gigantes, with the focus on their adventures rather than the riders themselves. The story depicts Zola, a machine inadvertently sent into space, which draws in materials around it, hinting at broader, more malevolent forces at play.
To enhance gameplay, the Road Trip mode features a branching path system with unpredictable route characters that create unique challenges based on player choices. Sakurai aimed to incorporate a diverse range of characters from the Kirby universe, ensuring a festival-like atmosphere that resonates with fans across the franchise’s history. Overall, the goal was to blend existing gameplay elements with fresh ideas for long-term engagement, providing both story and excitement within the game.
