Wildfires near Los Angeles and Ventura County intensified during a heatwave, prompting evacuations for thousands and destroying at least two buildings. The Canyon Fire, worsening rapidly, expanded to 5,400 acres with only 25% containment reported. Firefighters faced extreme heat, rugged terrain, and dry conditions complicating their efforts.
Residents of Val Verde initially saw flames nearby but could return home as conditions improved slightly by Friday morning, though air quality remained poor. As temperatures neared 100 degrees, fire conditions were still considered dangerous due to low humidity and wind.
The fire originated around 2 PM on Thursday and spread quickly, forcing evacuations, particularly in northern Los Angeles County. Authorities emphasized the importance of heeding evacuation orders, describing the current fire season as extremely challenging.
The American Civil Liberties Union raised concerns regarding a nearby detention center housing 5,000 inmates, while officials assured they were monitoring the situation closely. Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed support from federal agencies to combat the fires, with FEMA pledging to cover significant firefighting costs.
