In Adams County, Colorado, a resident named Janet has raised concerns about a significant dip in East Highway 36, just beyond the I-25 bridge. This issue has persisted for years, causing discomfort for drivers, including a humorous incident where a truck briefly became airborne. The dip, described as a double dip, affects traffic transitioning from eastbound Route 36 to eastbound Interstate 270.
An inspection report from the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) highlighted that while the bridge itself is in good condition, there is a structural rating of only 3, indicating potential problems. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) identified that the dip results from sedimentation and inadequate compaction of soil beneath the road, with the bridge resting on stable bedrock.
Although CDOT has acknowledged this issue and began designing solutions in early 2024, it has been recognized since at least 2006. Their repair plan involves extensive groundwork, including deep soil sampling and possibly removing concrete pavement to address the instability. Construction is slated to begin in spring 2026, following a recent re-bid process.
Despite the presence of warning signs, there have been 15 non-fatal crashes linked to the dip from early 2024 to mid-2025. CDOT maintains that as long as drivers adhere to speed limits, the roads are considered safe.
