A recent study led by Dr. Najmeh Sahebzadeh from the University of Zabol demonstrates that daily doses of probiotics and gut-friendly fiber can significantly enhance honeybee survival in cold temperatures. The research found that bees receiving these supplements showed improved resilience during cold exposure, with over 70% surviving at low temperatures when given high doses. Conversely, under extreme heat conditions (104°F), no amount of supplementation could prevent mortality, highlighting the limits of dietary interventions.
The diet included commercially available probiotics and inulin, a fiber that nourishes beneficial gut bacteria. While the study showed promise for improving bee health in cold conditions, researchers emphasized the necessity of managing external environments, such as providing shade and ventilation, to protect bees from heat stress.
Although the findings are based on lab-raised bees, the potential for practical implementations in beekeeping is promising. The study offers a low-cost strategy for beekeepers to strengthen colonies during harsh weather, but further field trials in natural hives are needed to validate the results. Overall, while diet can enhance resilience to cold, managing extremes in temperature remains crucial for bee survival amid climate change.
