A warm-up jacket worn by Wilt Chamberlain during the 1972 NBA Finals was purchased for $3.07 by a teenager named Quinn Brown at a Goodwill store in Oregon. Brown, who resells thrifted clothing online, discovered the jacket after it was dropped into a pile. The jacket, estimated to sell for between $150,000 and $250,000, was auctioned by Sotheby’s and ultimately sold for $89,600 after 48 bids.
Chamberlain, an NBA Hall of Famer recognized as one of the greatest players, has a storied history, including a record for the most points scored in a single game (100 points). After acquiring the jacket, Brown verified its authenticity by comparing it to a photo of Chamberlain. He posted about it on social media, which led Sotheby’s to contact him for the auction.
The auction house confirmed the jacket’s provenance, stating that matching pieces of this era are rare. Previously, a jersey worn by Chamberlain from the same series sold for $4.9 million at Sotheby’s. Brown expressed his surprise at finding such a significant piece of sports memorabilia.
