Michigan State’s athletic director, Warde Manuel, will step down at the end of the year, following an investigation into former football coach Sherrone Moore’s conduct and the athletic department’s culture conducted by Jenner & Block. President Domenico Grasso stated that the investigation revealed serious issues such as lack of accountability and concerns about retaliation. Though Manuel expressed pride in the department’s accomplishments over his 11 years—during which the school won multiple national championships—he was criticized for not addressing misconduct allegations effectively.
Despite speculation about his position, Manuel had stated previously that he had no plans to leave. His tenure saw significant successes but was also marred by scandals and investigations, including the recent one involving Moore, who was fired after a personal relationship became public. The investigation concluded that Manuel did not have direct evidence of misconduct involving Moore but noted his failure to act on allegations adequately.
The state of Michigan has invested approximately $12 million in this investigation, which has led the university to implement reforms aimed at improving compliance and oversight. Manuel’s resignation follows ongoing challenges, including scandal-related fines and legal issues facing other coaches.
