Two weeks after Nolan Xavier Wells’ body was found on Horn Island, Mississippi, his family is seeking answers about his mysterious death. The 18-year-old University of Mississippi freshman was last seen on a boat trip with friends on July 4, just before they headed back to school and work. While his friends returned with his belongings, Wells did not, prompting a national missing person search that ended with his body being discovered on July 6.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with ongoing investigations marred by misinformation and speculation, particularly on social media. Wells’ mother, Kristin Wonsley, gained attention for her viral posts seeking answers. Amid growing concerns over racial dynamics, the family’s attorney, Rev. Ben Crump, highlighted the potential racial factors at play given Wells was the only Black individual with a group of white friends.
Conflicting accounts have emerged, including claims from friends suggesting Wells may have met a young woman on the island and chosen to leave with her. However, his family remains skeptical, emphasizing their teachings about group safety. Compounding the mystery, Wells’ phone reportedly had deleted messages after it was returned.
An autopsy has been completed, but results are still pending. The Congressional Black Caucus has called for a thorough investigation. Wells’ funeral is set for Monday, funded by Tyler Perry.
