Early Saturday morning, guests at the Hampton Inn in downtown Portsmouth were abruptly awakened around 4 a.m. by vulgar messages broadcast over the emergency intercom. Police reported that an individual broke into a locked intercom panel, entering the hotel through an unlocked hallway designated for police and fire personnel. This person, suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, transmitted distressing messages that echoed throughout the hotel and adjacent apartment complex.
Guests expressed their shock, with one celebrating a birthday, initially mistaking the alarm for personal notifications. Ralph Basilière, another guest, noted the messages contained “very homophobic and threatening language.” Some attendees sought more than just an apology from the hotel, considering their expensive stay. Hotel management assured that security had not been breached, although they plan to increase patrols in the area. No arrests have been made, and authorities clarified that there’s no ongoing threat to the public.
