In a significant development, Portland city leaders have presented the Trail Blazers with a draft term sheet, marking the first step in negotiations to retain the team in Portland. This comes ahead of a City Council vote scheduled for August 12 to approve the preliminary term sheet. Mayor Keith Wilson expressed frustration about the team allegedly withholding crucial project details.
City Administrator Raymond Lee noted that the draft outlines the city’s financial commitments, stipulations for labor agreements, and fiscal protections, including an annual $3 million property tax offset from Rip City Management, which will increase over time. Furthermore, the document emphasizes community access and sustainability requirements.
While the Blazers confirmed receipt of the draft and are reviewing it, some City Council members remain hesitant to support the proposed $120 million investment without assurance of shared revenue from the team. City officials emphasize the need for a clear agreement to proceed.
Despite criticisms of the Blazers for lack of transparency, the team’s spokesperson argued that they possess more information than state leaders had during legislative discussions and are prepared to negotiate under the framework established by recent legislation.
City Manager Raymond Lee assured fans that efforts are being made to secure the team’s future in Portland, emphasizing the necessity of a mutually beneficial agreement. The council plans another public meeting before the August vote to discuss the term sheet further.
