Independent journalist Don Lemon recounted an incident where federal agents arrived at his Los Angeles hotel to arrest him despite his lawyer informing authorities he intended to surrender. He criticized the agents’ actions as a misuse of resources, stating that they wouldn’t have needed to seek him out had he been allowed to turn himself in. Lemon described the chaotic moment of his arrest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” where he was taken aback and questioned the absence of a warrant.
A grand jury in Minnesota indicted Lemon and other journalists, including Georgia Fort, on charges linked to a protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a church. Fort shared her traumatic experience of being arrested in front of her children, emphasizing the fear and disruption it caused in her family.
Both journalists believe their arrests are indicative of broader attacks on press freedom, expressing that such actions undermine the public’s right to be informed. Lemon clarified that he was reporting on the protest as a journalist, not participating in it. After spending time in a holding cell, Lemon was released and plans to plead not guilty. The Justice Department and FBI have not commented on the incident.
