Over 100 local veterans participated in the inaugural Triad Honorary Flight in 2025, departing from Piedmont Triad International Airport to visit monuments in Washington, D.C., honoring their service. This event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War’s end, marked by the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War and subsequent conflicts has had significant human and financial costs.
Veterans expressed how meaningful the trip was, with some finding it healing. The group included veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. Though the return was delayed by weather, they received a warm welcome home, contrasting the negative experiences many faced when returning from war. Duke Justice, a Vietnam veteran, reflected on the emotional significance of the welcome ceremony, stating it was a far cry from his previous experiences. The Triad Honor Flight plans to organize another trip later this year.
