In southern Pennsylvania, a gunman named Archangel Diogenes Ortiz opened fire at UPMC Memorial Hospital, resulting in the death of a police officer and injuries to five others. Authorities believe Ortiz had previously visited the hospital for medical reasons related to another individual. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but it appeared to target the hospital’s ICU.
Upon arriving, Ortiz took several staff members hostage and engaged in a shootout with police, where he killed 30-year-old Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police. Two other law enforcement officials were wounded but are in stable condition, along with several ICU staff who were shot or injured during the incident. Following the shooting, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro met with Duarte’s parents and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in his honor. Investigations are ongoing, including a review of surveillance footage.
