A shooting at a bar in downtown Austin early Sunday morning left two victims dead, including Ryder Harrington, a 19-year-old Texas Tech University student. In total, 14 others were injured, with three in critical condition. Social media posts from Harrington’s family and university community highlighted his vibrant spirit and the profound loss felt by his loved ones.
The shooter, 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, was killed by police shortly after the incident. He had a history of mental illness and was reported to have acted alone, though authorities are examining potential motives, including possible links to terrorism. Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal, had a troubled history, including a previous arrest.
As investigations continue, local officials, including Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Governor Greg Abbott, have expressed condolences and condemned any attempts to exploit the situation politically. A candlelight vigil is planned for Harrington, who was remembered fondly by family, friends, and his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi.
