A shooting incident occurred at the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacan, Mexico, on Monday, resulting in the death of a Canadian woman and injuries to at least 13 tourists. Jalen Aybar and his girlfriend, Jaslim Landaverde, were visiting the site when the gunman, identified as 27-year-old Julián Cesar Jasso RamÃrez, opened fire. Jasso was reportedly a copycat shooter inspired by past school shootings, exhibiting signs of psychological issues. He roamed the pyramid for about 25 minutes before being confronted by police and killed.
The attack has raised concerns over safety in tourist areas as Mexico prepares to host World Cup matches. Authorities are considering stricter gun laws and enhancing security measures, including potential installation of metal detectors at tourist sites. Despite the incident, officials insist it is an isolated occurrence and urge tourists to continue visiting Mexico, emphasizing the need for mental health resources and educational reforms to prevent such violence. The pyramid complex, an important historical site, was closed temporarily but set to reopen with increased security measures.
