In the recent Barcelona Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton secured his first victory for Ferrari in 31 races, overcoming a strategic battle and benefiting from the retirement of championship leader Kimi Antonelli. Hamilton, who had finished second to Antonelli the previous two years, expressed elation about his win, marking his 106th career victory.
Mercedes driver George Russell was initially positioned for a strong finish but faced engine issues that forced him to drop from second to third. Despite leading early on, the team’s strategy did not hold up against Ferrari’s late-race tactics, particularly Hamilton’s switch to a three-stop strategy.
Hamilton’s performance was bolstered by a timely pit stop during a virtual safety car phase, allowing him to rejoin ahead of Russell. He ultimately finished 19.5 seconds ahead, with Lando Norris completing the podium in third. Antonelli’s retirement, along with teammate Charles Leclerc’s mechanical issues, highlighted the race’s unpredictability, allowing Hamilton to gain crucial points. Antonelli maintains a 41-point lead in the championship standings, with Russell trailing in third.
This victory not only marked a significant turnaround for Ferrari but also ended Mercedes’ dominant start to the 2026 season.
